Carolinian: 2020 Special Issue

Readers,

2020 is a year that we will never forget. That was the idea behind this issue. It was a challenge that was met by tremendous hard work from student writers and editors across our campus. This issue is meant to encompass the reality of 2020 through the eyes of the student body.

From the Presidential election, a novel pandemic, movements across the country for social justice, etc. students at USC Upstate have had an unprecedented semester. This issue aimed to encapsulate the shared experience of the student body during one of the most challenging years in recent memory.

The stories were collected from newswriting classes in the Communications department during the Fall 2020 semester as well as stories written by the Carolinian staff.

The issue was put together by talented student writers that were guided by the editor of the issue, Renae Watson and Brandon Martin, the managing editor. Both are Junior student athletes who worked with a diverse staff to cultivate this collection of stories.

The design and layout of the issue was put together with the help of USC Upstate alumni Lucy McElroy, for which we are very thankful.

I also want to give a special thanks to the USC Upstate Sports Communications Department for sharing athletic photos and headshots.

As 2020 comes to an end it is important to note the historical nature of this year and this issue. It took a tremendous amount of hard work and perseverance to put this special issue together. I want to thank the administration, faculty, and most importantly, the students for the hard work done throughout this semester.

Until 2021,

Bryan Howell
