Next fall, students will finally enjoy the benefits of a project that has caused significant inconvenience this fall.
The primary complaint among students is the loss of parking spaces for daily commuters, leading to frustrations in finding parking spots and getting to classes on time during the morning rush.
Despite the challenges that come with any construction project in a high-traffic area, the $21 million library expansion approved in 2021 promises to be worth the wait. This addition is not only a beautiful update to the campus but also a space designed to enhance student experience as they pursue their goals.
One of the standout features will be the skybridge, a striking and eye-catching design by Mosely Architects, connecting the old library with the new addition. Overseen by Thompson Turner Construction, the project will allow plenty of natural light to flood in, creating an inviting atmosphere.
Students will benefit from the Career Management Suite, which includes a clothes closet offering free business attire for interviews. The new addition will also feature updated tutoring rooms and an event space that can be converted from three classrooms. Beyond these, there will be an athletic study hall and a new home for the Center for International Education, which will include multipurpose rooms. For those needing a break or a space to brainstorm with a group, the addition will offer lounge and open study areas.
The Dean of the Library and other librarians have envisioned this project for nearly two decades.
Director of Facilities Management, Fred Scott, mentioned that serious feasibility studies have been conducted several times over the past decade. He expressed gratitude to “Chancellor Harris for securing the funding for this magnificent building” in an interview for the school’s news brief in October.
The project remains on schedule, with the addition set to open in time for the incoming student body in Fall 2024.
