Alex Garland’s Civil War is a film about a divided country and journalists on a race to the capital.
Following four journalists in their attempt to race to D.C. to interview the president before the
rebel forces arrive. Produced by studio A24 with a budget of $50 million, this film was their most expensive yet.
Rather than focusing on the rebel states and their perspective, the film keeps a heavy focus on the journalists. In an interview with the Reel Roundup, director Garland states, “[The script] was always from the point of view of the journalist, and it was a growing sense of frustration…”
This also led to some disappointed critics, who wanted the film to take a more political approach, especially due to the film being released in an election year.
The four main leads for the film included actors Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura,
and Stephen McKinley Henderson. All did incredible portraying their conflicting characters,
especially towards the end of the movie.
Director of photography Rob Hardy did an excellent job shooting the film. Combing the elements of still photography for the film helped the audience connect with the characters. The added black and white photos were a personal favorite.
Overall, I rate this film a 4/5. The cinematography and sound were excellent, and I would
recommend watching this movie. It is currently available to stream on Max, YouTube, and Hulu.
