What to do during Homecoming weekend at USC Upstate

By: Alexa Robbins

This week, USC Upstate has been celebrate Homecoming, a time to honor its legacy and unite generations of Spartans. The campus has host several events throughout the week, but there are more planned for the weekend.

“The majority of these activities are actually the ideas and the creations of and organized by a variety of registered student organizations. These are events for students, by students,” said Dr. Khrystal Smith, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement and Retention Initiatives.

Here is a look at the fun-filled events our creative student body and generous staff have planned for this weekend in honor of USC Upstate’s 2023 Homecoming:

Friday, February 24th

From 7:30pm-10pm, the 2nd annual Spectrum Drag Show featuring the House of Mann will take place in the CLC Ballroom. The show is free for faculty, staff, and students. A $5 admission fee will be charged for guests.

Fraternities and Sororities will be competing in a Step Show Competition from 8pm-10pm in the Hodge Arena. This is a ticketed event and will be $12 for students and $18 for general admission.

Saturday, February 25th

The Homecoming Alumni Tailgate will take place in the Burroughs Parking Lot from 11am-3pm before the basketball game. While admission is free, parking will cost $20. Anyone who wishes to host a tent is required to purchase a spot in advance. Small spots will be $50, while large spots will be $100. Tickets to the basketball game must also be purchased separately for those who wish to attend.

“I’m excited about all of the events because this will be our first basketball centered Homecoming since before the pandemic, so it’s kind of our returning back to the model of Homecoming that we had as long as I’ve been here at the University,” Dr. Smith said.

It is safe to say that this year’s Homecoming will have the bit of normalcy we have been deprived of for the past few years and so desperately need.

Sunday, February 26th

Lastly, the USC Upstate Gospel Choir will close out Homecoming week as they host a concert for a night of praise and worship. Join them at 5 p.m. in the URC Great Room.

It is sure to be an exciting, fun-filled week for all who attend!
