The 2023-24 Women’s Basketball season officially started at Davidson College on Tuesday, Nov. 7, which is just the beginning of a fast-paced start of the season.
The Spartans will travel to East Carolina on Nov. 9th before heading out to Lexington, KY to face the Kentucky Wildcats.
The Spartans will then play in a trio of games before traveling down to Statesboro, GA to take part in the Georgia Southern Thanksgiving MTE. Following Thanksgiving, they travel to Western Carolina before hosting Furman and UNC Greensboro and then closing an intense out of conference schedule at Georgia Tech.
Freshman shooting guard Macy Wike emphasized the importance of the culture of the team in the upcoming season.
“Our coach has disciplined us in a way that we’re all staying connected, and our chemistry is growing," Wike said.
Another thing that was really emphasized was the culture of the Spartans with many team building trips and exercises taking place to ensure that cohesion. Wike also expressed excitement about the recently created rivalry with UNC Asheville as an Asheville native herself says it will be “interesting and fun to play them."
Returning for the Spartans this year will be Trinity Johnson (Gr., G) who was selected to the Big South Preseason All-Conference Second-Team.
Upstate was ranked 6th in the conference preseason poll.
Upstate soundly defeated Bob Jones University in exhibition play by a score of 73-33. The Spartans will compete next against Davidson College on 11/7.
